At Westchester Health, we strongly believe that an annual physical plays a very important role in keeping your child healthy and should take place every year even if he/she rarely gets sick. Lauren Adler, MD, FAAP, a pediatrician in our Westchester Health Pediatrics group, has written a very informative blog (excerpted below), on the subject, emphasizing the fact that not only do physicals give us the opportunity to examine your child at least once a year, they allow us to focus on your child’s physical and emotional well-being when they’re well, rather than sick.
Changes in the past year can affect your child’s health
At an annual checkup, we can be made aware of any changes in your child’s health, school or your family situation. Please bring a list of questions, concerns and observations about any facet of your child’s health to this appointment so we can address them and put your mind at ease.
We’ll perform important tests and take developmental measurements
During a physical, we will weigh and measure your child and plot his/her growth progress on national growth charts. This allows us to assess overweight or underweight issues, general nutrition and normal development. If a problem is discovered, we can refer your child to a specialist. In addition, an annual physical is required in order for us to continue writing prescriptions for medications.
Physicals enable us to stay up-to-date with your child’s immunizations
A current record of all vaccinations helps us ensure that they are all are up-to-date, which not only is required by most school districts but is a critical step in avoiding preventable diseases, like measles.
They also help us build a relationship with your child
Regular checkups allow us to get to know your child as a person, not just when they’re sick or need a flu shot. It’s important to us to build long-standing relationship with our pediatric patients, something that proves to be very valuable when they need to talk about sensitive issues like drugs, birth control or body image.
