Dennis McGroary, MD

Dennis McGroary, MD, FACOG specializes in Obstetrics & Gynecology and is board-certified since 2003. Raised in Westchester, Dr. McGroary graduated from The New York Medical College. He completed his residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Stony Brook University, where he was chosen to be chief resident.

Dr. McGroary joined the attending staff of Northern Westchester Hospital in 2001. He is well-known on Labor & Delivery for his reassuring manner and easy-going warm style. He is universally appreciated for his calm under pressure, and is often called in to assist other gynecologists in their cesarean sections.

When caring for laboring patients, Dr. McGroary believes that “less is more” with regard to medical interventions. He often works with doulas when the patient desires, which can lead to shorter labor and fewer cesarean sections. Based on the most current evidence and his own experience, Dr. McGroary takes extra measures to avoid episiotomy and perineal tears during delivery. It appears that his patience as well as his patients combine to result in his low cesarean section rate. He encourages vaginal birth after cesarean section in the right candidates, as well as vaginal delivery for twins. ‘Once a cesarean doesn’t have to mean always a cesarean’.

As a skilled gynecologic surgeon, Dr. McGroary practices minimally invasive surgery, including endometrial ablation, diagnostic and therapeutic hysteroscopy and laparoscopic and hysteroscopic myomectomy. In distinction to the surgeon who sees every post-childbearing woman as a potential surgical case, Dr. McGroary practices uterine preservation whenever feasible. In the event uterine removal is necessary, he is trained and experienced in laparoscopic hysterectomy, which allows the patient to have a much quicker recovery and smaller scars than the traditional open approach. This minimally invasive approach has been endorsed by the ACOG, as well as many women’s rights groups.

Dr. McGroary is a partner and founding member of Westchester Health Associates and is on staff at both Northern Westchester and Putnam Hospital Center. He has offices in Katonah and Yorktown Heights, as well as a satellite office in Carmel, New York.

Thanks to word-of-mouth from our lovely, growing practice of friends and family, Dr. McGroary draws patients from all over Westchester, Dutchess, Putnam and Farifield counties. He lives in Westchester with his wife and their four young children.
